St. Jude Catholic Church, Wakiso, organises the Parish Youth Apostolate Games, with about ten disciplines including football, netball, volleyball, sack racing and bottle filling. This year's theme was protecting the environment, and the games aim to encourage fitness and give young people from each zone a place to compete.
Two new disciplines were demonstrated in 2026, and Kho Kho was one of them. Kho Kho instructor Asiimwe Jovan showed the sport to the zone teams, explained its key points, and then the teams played, with innings run under the official rules of the Kho Kho Federation of India.
How the games are organised
The games run in two stages. Preliminary rounds are played zone by zone: Bukasa on 23 May 2026, Mabombwe on 30 May and Kasengeje on 6 June. The qualifying zones then meet at parish level at St. Augustine's College, Kayunga, in Wakiso District.
Bukasa, 23 May
Four zones, among them Bukasa, Nabukalu and Gimbo, competed. Gimbo had the best performance and points, and its girls were chosen to represent Bukasa in the finals. Jovan also spotted children who could form a Kho Kho academy, players for future clubs and people keen to coach.
Mabombwe, 30 May
About six zones took part, including Nkoowe, Mabombwe and Sanda, with boys and girls both playing. Nkoowe boys and Mabombwe girls came out best and were chosen to represent Mabombwe in the finals.
Kasengeje, 6 June
About six zones took part, including Kasengeje, Kikokiro and Mende. St. Charles Kikokiro, both boys and girls, performed best and qualified for the finals.
The finalists
- Gimbo girls, for Bukasa
- Nkoowe boys and Mabombwe girls, for Mabombwe
- St. Charles Kikokiro boys and girls, for Kasengeje
Each report ends with the same message: the tournaments were run with great sportsmanship and enthusiasm, and they raised interest in indigenous sports. The three reports are on the Publications page.
